Up-RE Skill Doesn’t HAVE to Hurt

Up or out? That is what we are hearing and seeing in the media. If you don’t learn to use technology, you’ll be out before you know it.

One question I asked myself is “what can I do practically and still learn and have fun along the way”?

I tried to learn Italian with Duolingo and it didn’t work for me. I figured that technology was far enough where I could learn a new language. For me, it didn’t work out but I didn’t give up testing new things.

I started working with AI and I was able to generate patterns with vector graphics for art projects. In some parts of the work, I was able to visualize something, use a prompt, shape it and then create it by hand. There was a ton of learning involved, and I was able to create some new artwork.

At work, I started using NotebookLM to import work I’ve done over my career. Once I generated PDFs, I could pull in a lot of things I wrote and ask questions of it. The best part of this is unless I ask the AI to go out and “discover” something, the source material is my work. It makes me feel validated for saving it all these years.

The key is finding opportunities to be practical.

I have found personally that AI is very broad. Some people have used the tools and found consistency. I haven’t seen them be consistent. I see AI injected into a lot of things but most of the time, it feels partially done. I’ll acknowledge these tools are getting better by the day but these service companies seemingly all work with some agile framework which means “maybe working.”

Consider this post a bit of a human prompt.

Look at the technology as something to help you. Play around and discover tools that offer free tiers. Explore asking questions and testing limits. You can enhance and up your game at your pace and your tempo. The opportunities to learn are in front of you and all you need to do is ask some questions.

Happy learning..
What have you done with AI? Share some stories of upskilling and how this has helped you. Maybe it will help someone else figure things out!!
