Be kind.
I have accounts on social media platforms for a few reasons. Most of the time, I don’t use these platforms for their intended purpose. For example, many local businesses put their information on Facebook instead of buying and maintaining a web page. For each of the services that I have, there is a reason for them.
A few years ago, I had a problem with Comcast digging a trench across my yard. The damage they caused was very difficult to fix. They didn’t help resolve the damage, I was frustrated about it and I wrote a post which found its way to Reddit. On Reddit, someone posted it to a Comcast channel where at the time Comcast employees were having conversations about work and all things. The post went viral and the things that people said were beyond nasty. They have a license to say whatever they want and be hurtful and vitriol. They went to my blog and spammed it, ripped into posts I had written, and it was just horrible.
I stopped writing for a while. I learned a lesson from this experience, and I decided that while I am interested in helping people and I am interested in writing and sharing my thoughts, I am not as immune as I thought I would be to the attacks.
Fast forward, I still write, I have a fairly small circle, and my posts are by design to make a point, or help. On the rare occasion I post something other than LinkedIn,
I am in the process of changing how I write and how I post. Shorter, cleaner and less .. This is the way the world is going.
