Someone stole the little cover that attaches and hides the hitch on my Toyota. It is a little thing, small and mostly unnoticed but when I saw it missing, I felt something. On many occasions people have chosen to take the tire caps for themselves. The reason this bothers me as much as it does is because this isn’t about food or water. This isn’t a starving child or mother. This is a small piece of plastic which covers a small area to make it look better. There isn’t any functional value to it.
I have something, you don’t have it, you want it, you take it. We see a lot of this in the world today. We have seen a lot of this in history. Someone has something, someone else wants it, they take it.
Now most people in society think this is wrong but this behavior persists. Many years ago, someone could lose a hand for stealing but I think that still wouldn’t stop people from taking something they want.
I don’t have any wisdom today about it, just frustration.
I believe, even if we gave every single person in the world a “fair” share of resources, for some, they would want to take more. I’ll keep some extra tire caps in the glove compartment and replace my little cover knowing that it may be gone again soon.
The problem seems to be people don’t think they are stealing anything, only that they possess it and if you have something that they want, they feel it is ok as possession overrides earning it, so they feel taking it isn’t a big deal. We have lost a moral compass today I am afraid.
I can empathize with your post and how this made you feel. Part of me hopes that it simply fell off. That being said, entitlement is a real issue in so many ways these days. When you put the new one in, see if you can add a large spring loaded stink bomb in there to show them who’s boss!
